World Is So Big and I Am So Small

William Kotzwinkle. Random House Value Publishing, $3.99 (24pp) ISBN 978-0-517-56310-6

Kotzwinkle, who has written the bestselling E. T. Storybook and The Book of the Green Planet, now turns his talent to a view of the world through the eyes of a small rabbit. The water in the sink tells the rabbit, ""I'll wash the sleep out of your head.'' As the rabbit slops his breakfast all over the highchair, it sighs, ``He takes me for an awful ride.'' Grabbing a shovel, the rabbit becomes a knight. And his father, the king passing by, carries the rabbit up to bed: ``Away we go, up the mountainside!'' The text is rather pedestrian; one never really steps into the little rabbit's place to see what he sees. Yet Servello's rabbit is a charmer, and his pictures, in shadowed pastels, highlight the sometimes overwhelming proportions of the toddler's world. (2-5)
