All-Star Section Eight

Garth Ennis and John McCrea. DC, $16.99 trade paper (144p) ISBN 978-1-4012-6326-3

Ennis (Preacher) and McCrea (Hitman) resurrect DC’s most politically incorrect team, which the two cocreated during their popular run on Hitman in the late 1990s. Sixpack, leader of the titular super-group, pops out of—or possibly into—his usual drunken fantasies in Noonan’s Sleazy Bar with only a bleary memory of the event that killed his teammates. He’s anxious about a new threat that only a reformed Section Eight can stop. Joined by newbies such as the Grappler as well as returning super-pervert Bueno Excelente, Sixpack attempts to recruit DC’s biggest stars to fill out his roster. The ensuing farces are among Ennis’s bawdiest lampoons. Beginning with a riff on “legacy heroes,” Ennis mocks Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and more in a series of misadventures concerned less with story than with gross-out humor and absurdity. Far more clever than Ennis’s halfhearted progressive-baiting are McCrea’s background gags, filled with sly hilarity. (June)
