Eleven-year-old Kelly is learning to use the VCR when she becomes nauseous and light-headed. Suddenly she is reliving part of the past dayshe has traveled through time. Kelly confides in her best friend Miri; Kelly's twin brother Scott also discovers her secret. When Miri's grandfather is shot in a robbery, she realizes just how the machine can aid her family. The story has an open ending, inviting both the reader's speculation and a sequel. While the idea of time-travel is always exciting, this story contains too much talk and not enough action to sustain readers' interest. The plotting and characterizations are dull, and most of the questions raised about the machine's fabulous potential are left unanswered. Illustrations not seen by PW. Ages 9-12. (Sept . )
