Blurbing with the Best of Them
February 13, 2008
First off, I'd like to thank Margie Lawson for the amazing job she did yesterday on the blog. She personally answered everyone's post, which is one of the things that makes her so special. And congratulations to the 2 winners: Jess (Who had the husband who kept his hands on his face!) and Amy Shojai (Who knows about nonverbal cat and dog communication!), You can email Margie to collect your prizes. Now on to the blurbs.

Dragonborn by Jade Lee
Read by Joyce
By command, Kiril is the Emperor's Dragon Hunter, and he's spent his entire adult life hunting and killing the creatures and the men bonded to them. He has always accepted what he has to do because he's seen that they are evil, especially in the person of the Emperor, a Dragonborn himself, who rules with domination and cruelty. When Kiril meets Natiya, a dockside tavern dancer, he is certain that she is missing daughter of the Dragon Scholars the Emperor killed years ago, and that she can lead him to the hatching caves, maybe to find the Queen egg the Emperor believes is there. Kiril becomes obsessed by Natiya, but wonders if it is she that sparks the passion in him, or if it is, as he fears, dragon magic.
Jade Lee's new romantic fantasy is imaginative and action-packed, and will delight the sword and sorcery enthusiasts among us. I found it a lovely way to spend a couple of cold rainy days.
A fascinating story set in a genuine Italian neighborhood, filled with characters who knew everyone's affairs, cooked the same delicious meals, voiced an opinion at all times and argued about anything and everything. Trish confessed to her mother that her boyfriend has been abusing her and now has threatened to kill her. When she is found missing, the neighborhood is up in arms and wants to help find her. However, since her boyfriend is what they call "connected", retaliation by the Mafia is a real threat.
Mary, Trish's lawyer and former high school classmate, is the one person who is able to locate Trish and tries to extricate her from this frightening scenario. Mary becomes the butt of the all the neighborhood and family's anxieties.
I grew up in an Italian/Polish neighborhood. Loved those people with their arguments, wonderful food, wild kids, etc. - we were expected to be somewhat more subdued. Can't say I always portrayed that picture.
So when I read this book, I felt like I must have lived there with them at one time.
Many twists and turns finally zero down to an amazing and most unexpected ending. A really engrossing and gratifying story!

A Distant Magic by
Mary Jo Putney
Read by Joyce
Nikolai Gregorio is but a street urchin in Malta when he's promised a life of privilege and magic by Scottish Guardian Macrae of Dunrath. En route to the British Isles, however, their ship is attacked by pirates and Nikolai is taken into slavery. Abandoned by the great mage, Nikolai swears vengeance on the Guardian and his family.
Twenty years later Nikolai finds aristocratic Jean Macrae visiting Marseilles and impulsively kidnaps her in his rage, only to find he doesn't quite know what to do with her. His hatred of slavery far exceeds his need for vengeance, and he can't be cruel to her, no matter the sins of her father. During an attack on a slave galley they discover in each other a valuable ally, and begin a mutual crusade to abolish the slave trade.
In this third book in the Guardian series, the mix of fact and fantasy portrays the growth of the abolitionist movement of the late 18th century. I found it educational and entertaining, magical and romantic. Everything I want in a book.
The CEO’s Scandalous Affair by Roxanne St. Claire
Read by Jennifer
This is the first book in the Garrison series. Parker Garrison is a Miami millionaire and Anna Cross is his efficient assistant. When Parker needs a last minute date, Anna fills in and is more than Parker expected from his co-worker.
While I would never have ordinarily picked up this book on my own, it was in the box of books Barbara gave me to read. I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised.
If a quick romance novel is what the doctor ordered; this is the book. A delightful story about a powerful CEO who has it bad for his Administrative Assistant. I'm hooked and I won't have to think twice about reading more of these books.
Everyone can use a good Faery Tale and this is chock full of them. Spanning a thousand years of magic, the original and creative faery stories are light and delightful. Even the titles are fun; Faery Much in Love, Faery Good Advice, and, my favorite, Faeries of the Caribbean, and more, and all are Faery Special Romances.
Jacquie Rogers is a bit of a Faery Godmother herself; the author's royalties go to the Childrens Tumor Foundation, ending Neurofibromatosis through research.
Bottom Line: Today is
Get a Different Name Day (no, I am not making this up, this is from a
Bizarre Calendar site), but I'm thinking a lot of the authors already celebrated this day. Break out the wine and chocolate covered strawberries.
