Right Brain, Left Brain, Whole Brain, No Brain?

November 29, 2007
Homer Simpson's Brain

While browsing blogs, I came across Magical Musings and guest Margie Lawson, a psychologist and a writer who presents full day workshops to  writers internationally.  She has developed psychologically-anchored deep editing systems and techniques that help writers add psychological power to their writing.  Margie gave this quiz to see if you are right brained/left brained/whole brained.

Cognitive-Style Quiz
Choose the one sentence that is more true.

1. A It's fun to take risks.

B I have fun without taking risks.
2. A I look for new ways to do old jobs.

B When one way works well, I don't change it.
3. A I begin many jobs that I never finish.

B I finish a job before starting a new one.
4. A I'm not very imaginative in my work.
B I use my imagination in everything I do.
5. A I can analyze what is going to happen next.
B I can sense what is going to happen next.
6. A I try to find the one best way to solve a problem.
B I try to find different answers to problems.
7. A My thinking is like pictures going through my head.
B My thinking is like words going through my head.

8. A I agree with new ideas before other people do.
B I question new ideas more than other people do.
9. A Other people don't understand how I organize things.
B Other people think I organize well.
10. A I have good self-discipline.
B I usually act on my feelings.
11. A I plan time for doing my work.
B I don't think about the time when I work.
12. A With a hard decision, I choose what I know is right.
B With a hard decision, I choose what I feel is right.

13. A I do easy things first and important things later.
B I do the important things first and the easy things later.
14. A Sometimes in a new situation, I have too many ideas.

B I prefer to do my work at the last minute.
18. A I keep everything in a particular place.
B Where I keep things depends on what I'm doing.
19. A I have to make my own plans.
      B I can follow anyone's plans.
20. A I am a very flexible and unpredictable person.
B I am a consistent and stable person.
21. A With a new task, I want to find my own way of doing it.
B With a new task, I want to be told the best way to it.

To Score:
Give yourself one point for each time you answered "A" for questions: 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 9, 13, 14, 15, 19, 20, 21.
Give yourself one point for each time you answered "B" for questions: 4 ,5, 6, 10, 11, 12, 16, 17, 18.
0-4 strong left brain
5-8 moderate left brain
9-13 middle brain
14-16 moderate right brain
17-21 strong right brain
Right brained people are creative, intuitive, and see patterns. They tune into nonverbal communication. They trust their hunches while left brained people are logical, linear-thinkers. They think rationally. They trust facts.

Bottom Line:  I got a 13, but I'm not sure if that's whole brain or "hole" brain.
This just in from Margie:
Post a comment and you may win a LECTURE PACKET from Margie Lawson.  The drawing will be at 9PM Mountain Time. The Winner will be announced in tomorrow's blog.

Okay, (gulp) I'll go first (after Barbara), because I would LOVE to win one of Margie's fabulous lecture packets! I got a 9...and sincerely hope this isn't the equivalent to our college ACT or SAT scores ;) I'm a middle thinker apparently, but I confess to arguing over several answers...yikes!

I got a 14--but on some of the questions, neither sentence worked for me. So I added C, neither. <G>

I'm a 13. I don't care for the number, but Margie has said before that is a good thing. I love the female/male brain diaghrams. Still chuckling other the male listening particle. Should have a disclaimer note; it disappears during sports programs. lol. Have a great day, ladies. di, hopes to win a packet too!

12. Not a surprise. I'm a nice combination of creative and analytical which has served me well over the years.

Marilyn AKA The Playground Monitor commented:

I was worried I was going to fail. I scored a 4 (though I did have a few where neither answer seemed quite right). So that makes me a strong left-brain person -- uncreative and unintuitive, which is a heck of a disability for a writer. This counts for why I have to work twice as hard to be half as good, I suppose.

LOVE the graphics! They look pretty spot-on to me. ;-)

Well, I was shocked at my 13 score. All this time I thought I didn't even possess a left brain! Who knew? And I'd be THRILLED to win one of Margie's packets so put me in the pool for the drawing.

(GREAT graphics on the male/female brain!)

I'm 11. Margie guessed more writers were whole brainers than the 7% average, and from the comments we got on Magical Musings, she was right. A huge percentage were whole brained or close.

I love the graphics too. So funny!

Hi Margie! I'm so bummed I missed you in SF. I tried really hard to make it, but I had a deadline . . . The online workshop I took from you awhile back really made me think, though I'll admit using color-coded anything makes me crazy.

I'll admit, I was shocked I scored a 17. Maybe you're not surprised, I don't know! :)

Very interesting quiz...thanks for sharing!!

Kirsten Scott commented:

Hi Margie, one of the Romance Bandits stopping by to say hello! :-) I'm one of your outliers--a 4! Strong, linear thinker, that's me! The fun part for me is that I can communicate and work well with the folks on the other side, so I like hooking up with the feeler/non-verbal/right brain folks in the crowd. Together, we make a really good team. :-)

Oh, and I'm also left handed, just to confuse things more. A left-brained, left-handed writer who gets everything mixed up.

I always enjoy seeing your stuff Margie; it always makes me think about myself and my process, and what's more fun than that?

hugs,

Cassondra commented:

Hey Margie! Nice to see you. Another Romance Bandit stalking your great information. I admit it. I couldn't finish the quiz. My answers were always, "Well, sometimes it's A and sometimes it's B. Depends on the situation..." Maybe I'm an alien. And the Male/Female brain diagrams would indicate that too. I lack the shopping and telephone skills glands, and my jealousy lobe is underdeveloped. Although, my shoe and handbag gland has at least doubled in size since joining the Romance Bandits and getting to know Anna and Tawny. Maybe that's a good sign. (bites nails over concern she's an alien)

Hello Brainy Posters --
It's MARGIE LAWSON!

A huge THANK YOU to Barbara Vey for the BRAIN post. KUDOS to BARBARA for the brain diagrams. Right on target!

Great to see you all here. I wish I could respond to everyone individually today. But I have some brains to reshape at work. :-)))

Donnell -- For me, your 9 fits you. Leaning toward logic, but covering all bases. How else could you coordinate a huge contest like the DAPHNE?

Susan -- Too funny! A 14, who CREATIVELY adds another category for responses. Your creativity is showing. ;-)))

Di -- Hmm, I wish I knew everyone's names. I'm whole brained - and I always want to know it all. I'm glad we connected before!

Jana -- Sounds like you know you're balanced. It does work so well for writers. :-))

Marilyn -- Hmm -- if you had a tough time answering some questions -- I'm betting that your 4 could just as easily have been a 6 or 7. Since you're more on the logic side -- you leaned more toward logic as you answered the questions. Your creativity is scrutinized before being approved. You're just as creative, you just think it through more before you leap.

Some people leap -- then look for the trapeze. You look for the trapeze, then leap. :-)))

More comments to come!

JENNIFER -- Now you can boast to your family that you have a whole brain. Glad you posted - maybe you'll be the WINNER!

EDIE -- Thanks for sharing about my hypothesis. I believe more writers are whole-brained. Writers who swing more left or right, COMPENSATE. The ones who swing more to the left find it easier to plot, stay on task, and develop a business plan. Writers who swing more to the right, are creative to the max, yet may have creativity overload. Too many fabulous ideas.

Both sides - have amazing strenghts. AND -- both sides can WORK and PRACTICE WHOLE BRAIN THINKING.

Edie -- as you know, I cover all this and MORE in my DEFEAT SELF-DEFEATING BEHAVIORS on-line course in January. ;-)))

Carol -- Hello! Thanks for taking the quiz and sharing your WHOLE BRAIN!

JAX -- another WHOLE BRAINER. Great to see you here too!

I HOPE WE HERE FROM SOME MORE OF OUR LEFT AND RIGHT BRAINED THINKERS TOO!

12-So that makes me middle brained. I would say that for anyone who wants to make a career in a creative endeavor needs to be balanced. I scored a 12 also. I usually score a bit more to the analytical side (I majored in Business and Economics in college), but after stuffing my internal editor in a box this month for NaNoWriMo, I've been exercising the other side a lot. I also tend to score more toward the male side than the female side on those types of tests too. DH has been interested in these types of studies for a while. He's definitely on the creative side of center though (he's also a writer, musician, designer, artist). We tend to complement each other's strengths, he has the great ideas and I figure out how to make them work. LOL

sorry if this posts twice! Hi! My friend sent me this link (she knows I am a big EDITS SYSTEM fan) Margie i've seen you many many times, but never stuck my hand out for a formal introduction. So glad to see you on here. I am a beginning writer and it was really eye opening to see where my brain fit amidst the other writers. Oh the shame! I'm a 17 . . . OOOZING creativity onto my laptop! I guess I got both right brain genes from my folks. I could have gone either way on 1 or 2 of those questions - I think i was trained from an early age to show off my creative side, and in doing so I shunned my left brain into hiding. Margie I need your help to coax him out again. Do you think your Defeating Self Defeating Behaviors class would do the trick (cliche alert!) :) I am heading back to school in January to get a degree in Psychology (gee, we are a lot alike . . .) and I NEED MY LEFT BRAIN! Don't put my name in the pot - I have all your lectures (I'm hooked on the EDITS SYSTEM ! ! !) But you might see me in DSDB next year! I scored a 7, but I have issues with the questions. A lot of my answers came about because I'm now very busy with some very involving creative projects - so I've had to become much more organized and "left brain" centered just so I can do the fun, creative "right brain" things I want to do (i.e., you have to meet your deadlines in order to get your books published!)

What a fun item. I'm so glad that Barbara featured Margie today.

Like many others I skipped three questions because I just have a dominant answer and ended up smack dab in the middle brain area.

I posted the link for my on-line students at THE WRITING LIFE: DO YOU HAVE THE BUSINESS SKILLS TO SURVIVE for Writersonlineclasses and wondered if Margie could address the idea of self-knoweldge versus how the world sees us.

I may have scored in the middle brain range, but suspect the world views me in straight-jacket no-nonsense analytical terms!

I got an 11, which makes sense since I somtimes think I'm rational and sometimes trust my hunches. Of course I've got to think about it first, then usually change my mind, then go back to my original thought, then...oh well, so it's hard for me to make up my mind! Thanks for the fun quiz! Well is the world on fire today or what! LOL, just took an IQ quiz on line and never did get the score. Everytime I clicked on results it took me back to the beginning of the 9 page test! So I figured I had no brain. (Yes I am procrasting on my WIP) Why else would I do that. But On this test I scored a 14, so I'm moderate and that works. Used to be really right but then 25 years of marraige to a lefty kind of puts a kink in the brain. Love it BARB!

Hello SUNSHINE --

Thank you for sharing your KUDOS and your thoughts about your RIGHT BRAIN strengths. You are a 17 -- and it sounds like you're concerned. You're definitely creative -- definitely right brained. You can play off your strengths more - if you consider whole brain thinking options before decision-making. :-))) Simple! STOP and THINK! GIve yourself the processing time you need to think things through.

Stand on that platform and check out the trapeze BEFORE you jump. Is there a net? Is the trapeze swinging straight and strong? Is it jerky? Wobbling? Is there a better trapeze swinging toward the platform to your right? Do you need to make your way toward it? :-)))

I do explore these issues and answers -- for RIGHT Brained, LEFT Brained, and WHOLE Brained THINKERS in my Defeat Self-Defeating Behaviors course. I'm teaching it on-line in January. Please visit my web site and click on LECTURE PACKETS to read a course description.

Thanks for posting. I'm glad I boosted your motivation today. :-))

HELLO EGG!

With a 16 -- you are creative. Sounds like you may be similar to at least 2 earlier posters. Concerned about the creativity overwhelming you in a distractionator way, or needing more focus. More direction. More productivity. OR -- ALL OF THE ABOVE -- AND MORE?

My Defeat Self-Defeating Behaviors course can show you the right tracks. Then you have to haul your hinnie down those tracks. :-)))

I've taught DSDB on-line six times -- and presented it LIVE in full-day workshops too. People say it's changed their lives. I wouldn't go that far. I will say that it impacts them. They IDENTIFY their strengths and learn how to ACCESS their strengths. That's BIG.

My on-line course will run the full month of January. You can read a course description on my web site, under the LECTURE PACKET button. It's over 200 pages of lectures. www.MargieLawson.com

Marianne -

You were IFFY on 4 questions. Odds are that your 12 -- could have been a 10 - 14. Still -- mostly whole brained.

Your question regarding how others may perceive you in terms of right, left, or whole brained thinking is a good one. GWEN SHUSTER-HAYNES posed the same question.

People may access different strengths to carry out different roles. When others see us primarily in one role in our lives, they may lock us in that trait-specific role. Then they're surprised when they see us display other traits.

It's the same with right, left, and whole brained thinking.

If you like, you could have others take the quiz directed toward you. ;-)))

I know I'm really late on this, but I just HAVE to respond. I'm a 16 (Does that mean sweet 16?). Ok, that's just enough left brain to keep me out of trouble, right? Only MODERATELY right brained? Of course I'll take the right side any day - creativity over facts! You betcha!

Funny though, when I have "Business" people talking to me at work, I'm "Just the facts, jack". Very to the point, very logical. Take me outta work and watch out! My dreams - especially lately. Scary!

Ok, I'm kinda cheating, am supposed to be writing on a manuscript tonite, but ended up wandering around your blog instead. Guess I'll go write a bit now. See if I can get the creativity to start brainstorming!

I got a 19. Heh, I'm reeeeally right-brained. It only makes sense. I'm left-handed, I'm a musician, an artist, and a linguist (my approach to linguistics is impossible to explain... I see language as a bunch of related images). Cool quiz :)

i had get 14, but i think i'm a whole brained because i had answered both A and B in 7, 10, 12, 14, 21.
I'm just sure that i think both in words and pictures, and i love psicology, astronomy, drawings and fairy things equally.
i'm a right handed with cross dominance.
