What Makes a Hero?

July 7, 2009
Public library...yay!!

Made it to NYC all safe and sound.  The only downside was being bumped to first class.  Really!  That's the life, I tell you.  It's going to be hard to have to side in the back among the minions after this rare treat.  And, as luck would have it, the man next to me has a daughter who loves to read...so a prospective YA reader.  Then I get to the hotel and there's a public library right across the street.  Sweet!

Cheryl, Nancy, author Karen Cino and Tammy

But the highlight of the day (or I should say night), was attending Lady Jane's Salon for the monthly romance readings.  This brain child of Hope Tarr, Maya Rodale, Leanna Renee Hieber and Ron Hogan just keeps getting better with time.  The cost to get in is only $5 or a gently used book with all proceeds to the Share the Love charity.

Author Karen Cino brought along her beauty shop buddies for a girl's night out.

Susie Felber

As a special treat, Susie Felber spoke about her mom, the late author, Edith Layton.  She recalled her mom writing 3 very different books to start, sci fi, mystery and romance, just to see what she could end up selling.  When she wanted to give up and refused to send in anymore manuscripts, her husband would submit them in under the dog's name.  And we're all grateful that, in the end, she didn't give up.

Anthea, Dee, Dianna

Mondays readers were Dee Davis who read from her Match Made in Manhattan(contemporary), Anthea Lawson (the Anthea part of the team, with Lawson unable to attend) reading their historical romance Passionate and Dianna Love who finished off with a bang reading a shoot 'em up scene from Whispered Lies (suspense).  Highly entertaining group, great drinks and an appreciative audience makes giving to charity an even bigger joy.

Then I got out my handy dandy Flip video and it was time for a Drive By Video™.  The evening's compelling question...What Makes a Hero?

Bottom Line: I'm off to the library to check it out, because you can never visit too many libraries.

Man you live the life. And I'm so happy to know I'm not the only one who loves to find libraries in my vacation spots. :D

What a pain, being bumped to first class! :) I hope you can adjust on the way home. Sounds like you're starting your trip off beautifully.

Thanks for your enthusiasm for public libraries! Out here in Ohio (Medina County--where you visited!!), Gov. Strickland was going to slash our state funding by 30%! And that's in addition to the 20% drop already seen due to lowered income tax revenue.

So, thanks for the library plug!

Oh wow Barb, you are definitely living the life! What luck to find a library so close! My three words to describe a hero would be: inteligent, sexy and passionate.

I had a blast at Lady Jane's Salon. Big thanks to you, Barb, for telling me what a terrific place Leanna, Hope, Maya and Ron have created for readers and authors. Wonderful atmosphere - like nothing else I've ever visited and everyone is absolutely wonderful. I was so flattered to read in this venue and thrilled to reconnect with many friends. Anthea has an amazing memory of when we first met and is up for a RITA award this year! Great to meet Dee for the first time.

Edith Layton's daughter Susie shared the most touching, and at times hilarious, snippets of life with her amazing mother. We will so miss Edith's heartwarming historical romances.

A rockin' night in NYC. :)

Barbara, I concur with Leanna Renee: you are spoiling us, both with your drive-by's to the Salon proper and all the wonderful blog posts. That said, spoil away!

Seriously, we at Lady Jane's Salon totally heart you.
