Total Eclipse for Moonlight
May 15, 2008

Alex O’Loughlin of Moonlight

Alex O’Loughlin as vampire Mick St. John

CBS, in an effort to get back to basics and target more women, will add three new dramas and two comedies in the fall. "Women drive network television, there's no mystery with that," said Nina Tassler, president of CBS entertainment. "How can we build on that ... it's always been an objective of ours."

With those pearls of wisdom, CBS cancelled Moonlight, the brightest new show in their lineup.  But I have to know...did they ask any women about this?  What about giving it some time to build an audience?

Moonlight is the story of Mick St. John, happy-go-lucky human until he fell in love (lust) with a vampire who turned him.  Now, 50 years later, he's still not pleased with his lot in life, but gets through the day being a private investigator.  Enter Beth Turner, investigative reporter for BuzzWire, an internet news show.  The two have a history though, as Mick saved Beth, as a child, from the evil vamp who originally turned him.  The shows are smart, funny, suspenseful and sexy as all get out.

With the popularity of paranormal romance, I'd think this show would be a no brainer for the tv execs.  This announcement has flooded the internet with blogs, message boards and comments to keep the show on the air.  One website is looking for blood donations for the Red Cross to keep the show on tv:  ALL donations, in the form of blood OR funds, will be donated ON BEHALF OF MOONLIGHT and CBS, as well as all parties involved, will be notified of your donations in support of the show.
               Blood drive for Moonlight

So tell me what you think.  Do we need another dumbed down half hour comedy that appeals to the hormones of a 14 year old boy?  What if the title was Law & Order:  Moonlight Unit or CSI: Moonlight (better odds of staying on)?  Do you watch it?  Is it worth keeping around?

Bottom Line:  Thank goodness I have my paranormal books to fall back on or I'd write a nasty letter to CBS...wait, does this blog count?

I, for one, am in the group that CBS supposedly wants to target next season and their new idea of how to do it doesn't thrill me in the least. I very rarely watch CBS shows as it is and probably won't now. To be honest, the only show I DID watch on CBS was Moonlight. I am thoroughly disheartened that they canceled it, to the extent that I will now boycott CBS. They just lost one of their target viewers.

I haven't watched Moonlight, however, in general I am very annoyed with the lack of time execs give shows to make an impact before yanking them off the air. Sometimes I hesitate to watch a show because I don't want to like it only to have it disappear two episodes later. If they'd spend half as much money letting these shows find an audience as they do hyping them up before their premiere, maybe they'd find a few more hits. Just my opinion.

I love this show and am also in the women's group they're hoping to target. Who can I contact about this? Would it help?

I really don't watch much on CBS. I did like Moonlight, but it seems that most of the new shows I liked got cancelled this year(Women's Murder Club and Moonlight are just a couple). I say the networks need to dump some of the reality shows and bring back regular tv shows.

Barb I know How you feel. My all time Favorite show Men In Trees was Cancelled too. It is a very sad thing. They always seem to cancel the good shows and leave on the boring ones.

I LOVE Moonlight. I had no idea it wasn't coming back. Bad decision on CBS's part. Now I'll be depressed all day! Personally, I'm sick of the dumb gameshows. How much intelligence does it take to pick a suitcase?

Huh. Moonlight was the only CBS show myself, my roommate, and our neighbors watched . . . all of us being female.

Barbara, I have to admit that although I enjoyed the first couple of episodes of "Moonlight," I haven't watched recently. I like paranormals but I also like SF - I suspect I'm not the only Geeky Chick who likes both genres. Frankly the SciFi network runs my household on Friday nights with its line-up of "Doctor Who" and "Battlestar Galactica." I suspect "Moonlight" would do better at a different time. It would be nice if CBS at least tried that before canceling it. I also loved Lifetime's "Blood Ties," but they buried that at some insane hour too and then quickly canceled it.

This is why I don't watch TV much anymore. Pretty sad for the networks that I now mostly tune to the History Channel or Discovery (or Brewers games:)). About all I watch on the networks is the local nightly news.

I'm VERY cranky about "Moonlight" being cancelled. It was one of the few shows I watched (New Amsterdam being another). WHAT WERE THEY THINKING? Letters written. Calls made. I'll even donate blood for this one. And if they asked me I'd tell them I want snappy dialogue in a well-written drama--oh wait. That was "Moonlight". grumble

I'm an avid paranormal fan. Moonlight did not catch my interest and I watch the first several episodes. It was not something I had to watch. To me, it was just another solve crime show, like New Amsterdam. I still to about two reality shows and the rest of the time is on the documentary channels. Then back to the network for local news.

Though, I have to say the networks are making a lot of viewers angry with how they are handling shows now. Can we stick to one time and show them every week? No wonder they are losing viewers. What happen to the good old days of programming?

The Dresden Files was cancelled. Now Men In Trees, Women's Murder Club, and Moonlighting (I liked New Amserdam too). And most of the shows replacing them don't sound any more entertaining. CBS certainly knew Moonlighting had a rabid fan base but apparently it was too expensive for the amount of viewers it got, although I think it should have had a chance to build its audience considering the writers' strike ruined the season. After the Jericho fiasco, I doubt CBS would reconsider. Guess I'll have to get my vampire fix (sans all the books) if that Sookie Stackhouse series ever makes it to cable.

I am just SO bummed. I love Moonlight, Blood Ties, New Amsterdam, Women's Murder Club and Journeyman. I can't believe they cancelled all these winners!! I'm usually lucky if I can find 1 good new show to watch any season let alone so many. My TiVo works overtime this year. Why do they always cancel the great shows?

You bet it does, Barbara. If this is CBS's way to driving us to read more books, then they're doing a damn good job at it. Now, I've got a reason to take their channel out of my Favorite's list.

Barb -- What a way to ruin a week, huh? I really liked this show -- the characters were great, it had lots of originality and the sensual tension between Mick and Beth was outstanding. The episode when Mick is trapped in the desert and Beth offers herself to him to save his life left me breathless.... Darn! First Blood Ties, now this? What am I going to watch when Battlestar Galactica (easily THE BEST show on TV) finishes its run? Terri

Argh. I was looking for new shows to get into, and Moonlight was at the top of my list. Good for you for campaigning for it. It seems like lately, shows are only running for 1-3 years before the plug is firmly pulled (Rome, Veronica Mars, Dresden Files). Don't even get me started on what Fox did to Firefly. Sigh.

Ok, am I the only one who just doesn't get it? You have a network that puts out a fantastic new show. This new show wins its time slot EVERY Friday night, pulls in at the very least over 7 million viewers, wins the People's Choice Award for Best New Drama, and has one of the hottest guys in acting in the starring role....and the girl is pretty darn cute herself! With two episodes left, a decision is made to CANCEL said show! Now, does that even make sense? Is Bubbles the chimp making the decisions? What the hell? I have never been so angry in my life, and am now utterly convinced that the powers that be at CBS have absolutely NO clue whatsoever about what the viewers want! As if the PC award was enough of a clue?!?! Obviously, no one is paying attention. Now, I normally don't even bother watching a new show in its first season anymore..for JUST THIS VERY REASON!!! Apparently for a show to get renewed it either has to suck, be some new crappy reality show, or basically be so dumbed down that a 5 year old wouldn't be interested. Why do we possibly need any more new comedies??? The only one really worth watching is Two And A Half Men. Do we really need any more CSI shows? For crying out loud people! A little originality is a GOOD thing!! Are you not catching on here??? I, for one and so VERY sick of reality shows that I could literally hurl. Survivor lost its appeal after Rupert was voted off the island. The only shows I even bother to watch on CBS are Ghost Whisperer and Numb3rs. When Moonlight came on, it was actually worth staying home on Friday nights again! Oh, but God forbid...CBS can't have that! They've decided that we need a show called the Ex List. Some drivel about a woman who searches her past loves to find her future husband. YAWN!!! Can something possibly be more BORING! Needless to say, I will not be tuning in. In fact, I'm done with CBS. I will NEVER watch another new show on CBS. Not even if they PAID me. Apparently, I'm too intelligent to be included in their "target audience." Well, CBS execs...someone needs to saddle the clue pony for you, because your decision to cancel one of the best new shows to come along literally in years is an insult to anyone with a functioning brain.
