Trailers for Sale or Rent
September 4, 2007

Coming soon to a bookstore near you....cue the music. While checking out a lot of author's websites lately, I've been amazed by the number of book trailers available. Some are home made and others done by a professional company. But is the end results necessarily worth the time and money involved?
My first experience with this phenomenon was in 2004 when Heather Graham was handing out dvds of Dead on the Dance Floor. To me, this was the best thing since sliced bread. I popped it in the machine and here was a video to rival coming attractions at the multiplex. Even better because I personally met one of the stars. Yes, Heather herself was featured as the Dancing Diva who is murdered "on the dance floor." Heather has done competitive ballroom dancing and even had the requisite red sequined gown. It was great fun and absolutely made me want to read the book (which I did).
With the advent of YouTube and MySpace, book trailers have really taken off. I recently met Sheila Clover English, CEO of Circle of Seven Productions and asked her about this phenomenon.
BV: How have you seen the demand for book trailers increase in the past year?
SCE: We’ve seen a dramatic increase for book trailers, both to create them and to use them as content. More and more booksellers are utilizing them on their own sites and in newsletters, and boutique or specialty sites are also using them.
BV: What's the approximate cost involved?
SCE: We have videos that come with distribution starting at $250 and going to upwards of $50,000.
BV: What is the benefit?
SCE: Longevity, branding, fan base expansion, cross-genre highlights, name recognition, engages the viewer, multi-utilization, cost effective, target-audience opportunity and just plain fun!
BV: What's the response been?
SCE: The response from both authors and readers has been very positive! Our MySpace has over 7000 people on it and our newest endeavor, Reader’s Entertainment TV is growing faster than we could have hoped!
BV: Where do you see this going?
SCE: I expect to see book video become a main element in most author’s marketing campaigns. The outreach of video to potential and traditional readers continues to grow as social network sites lure people from the TV to the computer.
Marjorie M. Liu uses video's on her website to entertain her readers. She feels the readers visit because they are already aware of her books and Marjorie wants to give back a little to her fans. Kelley St. John produced her own for her Sexth Sense series with the tagline, "Even the ghosts are hotter in Louisiana," (you gotta love it). Author Debra Webb took it to a whole new level by posting mock crime scene photos. Very gory, but she feels it's cool. I'm thinking ewwww, but I just ate.
Here's a few to trailers to check out (along with the author's previously listed):
Pearl Jinx - Sandra Hill

No Safe Place - JoAnn Ross
Lessons of Desire - Madeline Hunter
Must Love Dragons – Stephanie Rowe
Ultra Violet - Nancy Bush
The Irish Devil - Diane Whiteside
Absolute Fear – Lisa Jackson
Fanged and Fabulous – Michelle Rowen
Dark Demon – Christine Feehan
The Summoner - Gail Z. Martin
The Immortal Series - Jennifer Ashley, Robin T. Popp, Joy Nash
The Lady of Serpents – Douglas Clegg
Fly Me To The Moon- Alyson Noel
Now, I watched them all and some were clever, some fun and some just ok, but would watching them make you want to buy the book?
Bottom Line: I'd like to see some of these trailers in a double wide.
