Librarians Rule!!
July 11, 2007
Today was all about the librarians. In a program founded by author and former librarian Cathie Linz, the librarians were treated to a breakfast and speeches by Suzanne Brockmann and Shana Abe (who wasn't warned that she had to give a speech, poor thing. She was still delightful). The librarians were then allowed in the goody room where they could stock up on free books, bookmarks and a variety of author giveaways. Then came a workshop hosted bySusan Elizabeth Phillips and Jayne Ann Krentz, who clearly had worked together before and taunted each other to the delight of the audience. Nora Roberts was the guest speaker at the luncheon and the group received a copy of her book High Noon.
The afternoon mixer had booksellers and authors rubbing elbows. The thing I find fascinating about this is how shy a lot of the authors are. Even though we adore them, they are more comfortable in front of their typewriters than in front of a crowd. Which is fine by me. I wanted to tell some of them to write faster because I absolutely love their series and need to know what happens next.
The big event of the day is the book signing with all proceeds going to Writers for Life literacy fundraiser. There were 450 authors and hundreds of excited fans. But the highlight for me was Sherrilyn Kenyon, face beautifully painted with glittery green paint and fangs, with a full size feathered swan hat. It was truly a Kodak moment.
I finished the evening off at a party hosted by Nancy Berland Public Relations. It was held on the observation floor at the top of the Hyatt. The view was spectacular and the food was gorgeous (really, it was so pretty that Linnea Sinclair took pictures with her phone and sent them to her husband who was home eating frozen fish sticks). I did get to ask Linda Lael Miller about writing a sequel to her 1994 vampire novel, For All Eternity. Sorry, unless she feels she has a strong story to tell, there won't be another book.
After dragging my tired butt to my room, I counted 26 books that I had lugged back.
Bottom Line: Note to self...next time bring 2 empty suitcases.
