America's Next Best Celler Contest

June 3, 2009
Sorry this is a day late, but I was lucky enough to catch a 6:30 a.m. direct flight home as opposed to flying from NY to Atlanta and then on to Milwaukee.  Bad part is that I needed sleep (I know, I'm a slacker) and didn't get the blog done like I wanted to.  So just pretend it's yesterday when you read this.

Monday I got to visit the Dorchester office for lunch.  They are are great bunch and you'll have to catch the Drive by Video™ at the bottom of the blog.  They told me about a great contest they have going called America's Best Celler Contest.  It's done like a serial where you post just 500 words at a time.  It's kind of an American Idol for writers with judges and everything.  I was even asked to be Paula Abdul a judge.  The public votes and you win a guaranteed publishing contract.  The contest started June 1st so get going. Go here for more details.

Wendy, Marjorie, Diane and Amanda

Monday night was very special as I had another chance to visit Lady Jane's Salon.  New York's first (and so far only) romance fiction reading series.  The readers were Marjorie M. Liu, Wendy Corsi Staub, Diane Gaston & Amanda McCabe. They all read selections from their books and had the crowd eating out of their hands.  The donations of money and gently used romance novels are given to battered women's shelters and women's prisons.  A wonderful charitable event.  I wish we had a venue like that here.

Look for the WW Ladies book club blurbs on Friday this week because tomorrow I'll have a special blog about What is Women Fiction? And there will be a very special Drive By Video™.

Now I want you to meet MSG. N. Noel Delacruz.  He's been in the Army for 17 years and was my seat partner on the plane.  He was on his way to San Francisco to attend the retirement of his brother from the Air Force.  But his story doesn't end there.  He has 17 members of his family in the Armed Forces with his father serving in all of them including the Coast Guard and retiring from the Army after 17 years.  Noel also informed me that 2 more of his nephews have already pledged to sign up when they are old enough.  So, here's to 3 generations of heroic Americans.  I thank you and your family from the bottom of my heart.

Finally, please visit the Word Wenches who are offering a special tribute to Edith Layton who passed away Tuesday.  Edith, you will be missed.  You can leave comments for her family there.

Bottom Line:  What can I say, I heart NY and can't wait to get back in July for Thrillerfest.  Still no DeNiro sighting. <sigh>

Hey Barb, I'm glad the Dorchester office showed you support with the subs and fruit. :) It looks like you had a great time

It's amazing that Noel has that many family members in the Armed Forces. I hope and pray that everyone of them live long and healthy lives.

Finally, I am so sorry to hear about Edith Layton. The romance world isn't going to be the same without her. Her site says that she finished a book a few months ago, so at least we have yet another book to remember her by.

Hi Barbara... Maa'm, Thank you for your courage of asking AirTran personnels to fly me on FIRST CLASS. It is highly appreciated, and people like YOU are the reason why service members like me will change their mind to stay longer in the service. My family and I and in behalf of all my fellow service members all over the world, "We Thank You" from the bottom of our heart.

Just a slight correction, I have 18 years and 7 months total of service. I will give you more updates later.

As soon as the plane landed in San Francisco, my nephew Michael Abad, Jr sent me a text stating that, he just enlisted and just finished signing a contract with the US Marines. He will leave for Basic Training either August or September. He will be in the US Marine's Intelligence School right after completing Basic Training.

My sister Clare and her husband Michael Sr was kind of upset. They want him to finish college and then join the US Air Force later. I advised them to support their son's decision to serve his country earlier than expected. For him to joined without his parent's Blessings; I think, it is a sign of MATURITY on his part. I applauded him for his courage to do that although it would have been better if he asked his parents first. Of course I am always the proudest in our family since it has been my goal to build a "PLATOON" of soldiers from my family members in the US Armed Forces. Michael Jr will join us today, coming from San Antonio and I cannot wait to see him and tell him how proud I am as his uncle.

Romel Delacruz Gayagoy, my nephew in Miami joined the US Army last month and will leave for Basic Training in September. He will become a Medical Laboratory Specialist. He is the son of my sister Eleanor, a veteran in the US Army who retired 2 years ago.

Yesterday, my brother's retirement (MSGT Austin Delacruz,Jr) in the USAF was great. I was teary eyed capturing the moment to an ending of a great career, and it is something that I am always THANKFUL of. The sacrifice of our DAD (Austin, Sr), that he gave to this country, is something that I am really proud of. We have a career because he started it and we followed, and now the 3rd generation in our family keeps following. I am sure this will never end.

Thank you again, and I will be in touch. God Bless You and your family.

Hi Barbara, it was so great to come across your blog today and see the pics of you at the Dorchester office. I've heard so many great things about them and have friends, like Jeff Buick, who are published by Dorchester.

A few comments about their Next Best Celler contest on Textnovel.com...it is very cool to be involved. I'm hoping to be the "new voice" in romance with my debut romantic suspense, Lancelot's Lady, which I plan to write under a pen name--Cherish D'Angelo. (sounds romancey, huh? lol) I invite you to check out Lancelot's Lady.

I mainly write suspense thrillers, but I also have a general fiction/YA title that's in negotiations for a major motion picture deal. Romance was something I grew up reading though, and something I've played with, but never attempted to get published. Until now. :-)

One thing I like about Dorchester is that they like to try new things. And so do I. I also like the fact that they invite people like you to the office to have subs! lol

bestselling author of Whale Song
