In this absurdist take on high school archetypes, student body chair Shiels Krane meets the ultimate outsider, Pyke, a strangely alluring humanoid pterodactyl who flies into school unannounced and disrupts her meticulously controlled life. This debut YA novel received a starred review from PW.

Maggie and Wendel: Imagine Everything! by Cori Doerrfeld. Simon & Schuster, $17.99; ISBN 978-1-4814-3974-9. This book contains three vignettes about sibling elephants Maggie and Wendel, as they learn to play harmoniously together. The book earned a starred review from PW.

Inside of a Dog (Young Reader’s Edition) by Alexandra Horowitz. Simon & Schuster, $16.99; ISBN 978-1-4814-5093-5. The middle grade adaptation of the bestselling nonfiction book for adults gives readers a glimpse at how dogs perceive the world.

The Way I Used to Be by Amber Smith. S&S/McElderry, $17.99; ISBN 978-1-4814-4935-9. This YA debut follows 14-year-old Eden’s rape by her brother’s friend, and her efforts at recovery.

Wink Poppy Midnight by April Genevieve Tucholke. Dial, $17.99; ISBN 978-0-8037-4048-8. Tucholke (Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea) rapidly alternates among the perspectives of teenagers Wink, Poppy, and Midnight in a dark, unpredictable mystery that subverts literary conventions.

This Is Where the World Ends by Amy Zhang. Greenwillow, $17.99; ISBN 978-0-06-238304-4. Eighteen-year-old Micah Carter cannot remember what happened on the night his “soul mate” Janie’s house burned down. As he sifts through recollections of Janie, Micah realizes that despite their secret friendship and mutual desire, Janie is a stranger.
