Here we offer a roundup of some noteworthy children’s books that are making their way back into print this fall. Represented among this crop are the original source of a popular American film adaptation, a multimedia picture book from a team of well-known mid-century designers, and an overlooked picture book from two beloved children’s book creators.

Bertram and His Fabulous Animals

Paul T. Gilbert, illus. by Minnie H. Rousseff and Barbara Maynard (Pomegranate Kids, Sept., hardcover, $24.95, 978-0-7649-7539-4)

First published in 1937, this picture book follows Bertram, who can realize his wildest imaginings, and hunts for treasure with fantastical animals including a griffin and a winged horse. The book features full-color vintage illustrations.

The Rescuers

Margery Sharp, illus. by Garth Williams (NYRB, Sept. 6, paperback, $9.99, 978-1-68137-007-1)

The English novel that launched a series of Disney adaptations makes its way into a new paperback edition. This middle grade adventure, featuring illustrations from Garth Williams, follows Miss Bianca of the Prisoners’ Aid Society as she enlists help to release a imprisoned Norwegian poet.

Mouse House

Rumer Godden, illus. by Adrienne Adams (NYRB, Sept. 9, hardcover, $15.95, 978-1-59017-998-7)

In this 1957 illustrated chapter book, a live mouse takes up residence in a girl’s doll house. The book is a small trim size, with full color illustrations by two-time Caldecott Honor artist Adams.

This 1970 picture book by two celebrated graphic designers explores everyday sounds through papercuts and ink illustrations.

Charlie the Tramp

Russell Hoban, illus. by Lillian Hoban (Plough, Oct. 3, hardcover, $16, 978-0-87486-780-0)

A book from the team behind Frances the Badger picture books celebrates its 50th anniversary with a hardcover reissue. In the picture book, Charlie is a little beaver who dreams of being a tramp: “Tramps don’t have to learn... how to build dams. Tramps just tramp around and have a good time.”

The Marzipan Pig

Russell Hoban, illus. by Quentin Blake (NYRB, Oct. 4, hardcover, $15.95, 978-1-59017-999-4)

Two storied children’s book creators team up for this picture book in which a Rube-Goldberg-esque series of episodes unfurls from the seemingly innocuous occurrence of a marzipan pig falling behind a couch. 

The Complete Polly and the Wolf

Catherine Storr, with illustrations by Marjorie Ann Watts and Jill Bennett (NYRB, Oct. 4, hardcover, $17.95, 978-1-68137-001-9)

Comprised of 13 short stories, this volume marks the first time these stories appear in a single volume; the first collection was originally published in 1955. The interconnected stories follow Polly, who is initially afraid that a wolf lurks under her bed, but the clever girl thwarts the wolf’s various attempts at capturing her every time.

The Happy Hunter

Roger Duvoisin (Enchanted Lion, Oct. 12, hardcover, $16.95, 978-1-59270-2053)

Named a New York Times Best Illustrated Book of 1962, an overlooked work by the Caldecott Honor artist makes its way back into print in a new hardcover edition. Based on a true story, the picture book follows Mr. Bobbin, who sets out to go hunting until he remembers he’s a vegetarian and loves animals too much to harm them.
