Hitting shelves next week are a picture book about a classic combination, a novel about a teen trying to protect his sister from her psychopathic tendencies, and a collection of YA stories set in a familiar world.

Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy by Cassandra Clare and Sarah Rees Brennan. S&S/McElderry, $23.99; ISBN 978-1-4814-4325-8. Two bestselling YA authors team up to create a series of interconnected novellas set in the world of Clare’s Mortal Instruments series.

Take Heart, My Child: A Mother’s Dream by Ainsley Earhardt and Kathryn Cristaldi, illus. by Jaime Kim. Aladdin, $18.99; ISBN 978-1-4814-6622-6. In her debut children’s book, Fox & Friends cohost Earhardt assumes the voice of a mother expressing her hopes for her daughter, advising her child to take risks and be independent.

Vroom, Vroom, Trucks! by Karen Katz. Little Simon, $6.99; ISBN 978-1-4814-4209-1. Katz’s signature round baby makes an appearance in this lift-the-flap book, behind the wheel of a dump truck.

Good Morning, City by Pat Kiernan, illus. by Pascal Campion. Farrar, Straus and Giroux, $16.99; ISBN 978-0-374-30346-4. Kiernan knows a lot about how a city shakes off sleep: he’s the morning anchor on NY1, New York City’s 24-hour news channel. Combining short, poetic descriptions with onomatopoeia, the first-time children’s book author explains that the city wakes up long before readers do – even before the sun itself. The book earned a starred review from PW.

My Sister Rosa by Justine Larbalestier. Soho Teen, $18.99; ISBN 978-1-61695-674-5. When 17-year-old Che and his family move from Bangkok to New York City, his biggest concern isn’t adjusting to a new country or making friends: it’s his 10-year-old sister, Rosa. Che’s family, originally from Australia, never stays in one place for long, constantly on the move due to his parents’ work, but Rosa’s dangerous and calculating behavior is a terrifying constant in this YA thriller. The book earned a starred review from PW.

Mac & Cheese: A Friendship Story That Celebrates Being Different by James Proimos. Holt/Ottaviano, $16.99; ISBN 978-0-8050-9156-4. Right from the get-go it’s clear that Mac – a geeky, glasses-wearing noodle – and Cheese, a squat hunk of cheese with a snaggletooth, are meant to share the same camaraderie as Frog and Toad and George and Martha.

The Cat from Hunger Mountain by Ed Young. Philomel, $17.99; ISBN 978-0-399-17278-6. Young (Should You Be a River) weaves an elegant cautionary fable about Lord Cat, who lives “high above everyone” in a lofty pagoda. Young’s evocative, abstract paper collages convey the vulgar opulence – and later the terrifying scarcity – of Lord Cat’s existence. The book earned a starred review from PW.
