Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers has announced the forthcoming release of award-winning songwriter and performer Lizzo’s debut picture book, Lil Lizzo Meets Sasha B. Flootin’, illustrated by Mark Pett. Kendra Levin, VP and editorial director of Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, acquired North American rights from Gwen Beal and Albert Lee at United Talent Agency. The book is slated to hit shelves on September 8.

Based on Lizzo’s real-life flute, nicknamed “Sasha Flute,” the picture book follows young Lizzo, who is in search of community, and Sasha Flute, an instrument that can’t seem to hit the right note. Together, the pair create beautiful music across the world and form a new friendship.

“When I was young, I struggled to fit in but playing the flute helped me find my voice,” Lizzo said in a statement. “I want this book to teach every young person out there that your passion can give you purpose, belonging, and lead you on a journey to fulfill your wildest dreams.”

The recipient of four Grammys, Lizzo is the artist behind popular songs such as “Juice” and “About Damn Time.” She’s also an Emmy-winning producer of the competition reality show Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls.

“Lizzo is one of the most popular and widely recognized artists in the world today, but most important, she continues to be a norm-shattering, boundary-pushing icon of positivity and joy,” Levin said. “Her debut picture book is a perfect embodiment of the message that all her work has been about and that has inspired so many people—that you have a voice, you have worth, and you can change the world by radically loving and accepting yourself.”
