This month authors made appearances with Saturday Night Live writers; launched books about an iconic country star; and celebrated a book release as a family.


I Want to Be a Debut

Debut author Julio Torres (r.) celebrated the book launch of his picture book I Want to Be a Vase (Atheneum) with an event at the 92nd Street Y in New York City on June 11. Torres appeared in conversation with former Saturday Night Live co-writer and Fire Island star Bowen Yang; they discussed their SNL memories, Torres’s inspiration for the book, and the inner lives of inanimate objects, and closed the night with a book signing.


Not Your Usual 9-5

On June 11, author Robyn McGrath launched her debut biographical picture book Dolly!: The Story of Dolly Parton and Her Big Dream (Little, Brown/Christy Ottaviano Books) illustrated by Ellen Surrey, at Brentwood Social House partnership with BookPeople in Austin, Tex. McGrath held a reading and signing, as well as a Dolly costume contest.


Love Conquers All

Family members Dave Eaton(l.), Andrea Melvin(r.), and their son Michael Clark Jr.(m.) launched their picture book Love Rules (Feiwel and Friends) at Schuler Books in Grand Rapids, Mich. Love Rules, illustrated by Danielle Parchment, follows their journey to becoming a family—including their viral adoption hearing and more. The event included a reading, a signing, and a Q&A with the audience. The family is pictured here with Michael’s kindergarten teacher here with Michael’s kindergarten teacher Kerry McKee.
