This year marks the 16th anniversary of International Dot Day, a special occasion for Peter H. Reynolds, the author-illustrator of picture book The Dot (Candlewick, 2003). The book follows how encouragement from an art teacher motivates a student to make her first mark on a piece of paper, leading to artistic creation. International Dot Day began on September 15, 2009, when teacher Terry Shay introduced the story to his students. To celebrate, Peter H. Reynolds and his twin brother Paul, who have collaborated on other works such as Going Places and Our Table, appeared at several events to honor the book’s anniversary:
