‘It’s an Honor to Be Here’

On February 7, author Brynne Barnes attended the 57th NAACP Image Awards Nominees’ Luncheon held in Hollywood. Barnes’s picture book Black Boy Rise (Chronicle), illustrated by Bryan Collier, was nominated for Outstanding Literary Work in the Children’s category. Here, Barnes shows her nominee certificate.


A Big Red Birthday

Scholastic celebrated the birthday of beloved character Clifford the Big Red Dog on February 14 with a nationwide costume tour, during which Clifford made appearances at several bookstores. Here, Clifford dropped by Brick and Mortar in Redmond, Wash., on February 13 to greet young fans.


A Character Introduction

The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst, Mass., welcomed author-illustrator Claudia Rueda on February 21 for a storytime and presentation of her picture book Meet the Smushkins (Candlewick). Kicking off a series, the book follows the titular family as they search for the perfect house that accommodates everyone’s whims. Here, Rueda introduces her characters.
