Editor Jerry Gross died in Santa Monica, Calif., on July 6. He was 81.

In 1996, Gross helped to co-found the Independent Editors Group, a cooperative of experienced editors who had worked for, and then resigned or retired, from top publishing companies in New York. Gross also compiled two books on publishing: Publishers on Publishing and Editors on Editing.

After graduating from City College of New York, Gross got his start in publishing in the mailroom at Simon & Schuster. In his nearly 60 years in the industry, he held editorial positions at a number of major houses, including New American Library, Warner Books, and Everest House.

Family and friends will celebrate his life at a memorial service later this year. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to:
