Dark Horse is significantly ramping up its Original’s line of creator-owned graphic novels this fall with books by an array of award-winning creartors, including a new book by Sara Ryan and Carla Speed McNeil and collections of webcomics Bandette and Sin Titulo, as well as works from such indie stars as Shannon Wheeler. Sam Humphries and Alex DeCampi. It’s an eclectic line that gives Dark Horse a much bigger footprint in the graphic novel space.

Perhaps the biggest news is October’s original graphic novel Bad Houses by Sara Ryan and Carla Speed McNeil. It’s described as the story of two teens who try to find the secrets of their home, a failing logging town in Oregon. Ryan is a respected YA novelist and an Oregon Book Award winner; McNeil won the LA Times Book Festival prize for her SF epic Finder. The book was originally slated to be published at DC’s Vertigo imprint but was released when they changed their publishing plans. Dark Horse provided the first pages in an exclusive preview for PW.

Also just announced, Bandette, a collection of the Eisner Award-nominated digital comic by Paul Tobin and Coleen Coover. First published online as part of the Monkeybrain digital imprint, Bandette is the story of a teen-age girl who steals art in a romanticized Paris. This hardcover collection will include a new story, pin-ups and a forward by Dr. Who writer Paul Cornell.

In November, there’s Sabertooth Swordsman by Aaron Conley and Damon Gentry, a stylish fantasy in the vein of Orc Stain and Mesmo Delivery about a farmer who becomes the Sabretooth Swordman to rescue his wife from Mastodon Mathematician.

Other Originals releases include September’s Sacrifice by Sam Humphries and Dalton Rose, originally a self-published series about a modern man sent back to Aztec times. The book includes extra pin-ups by Bryan Lee O’Malley, Cliff Chiang, and Paul Azaceta. Smoke/Ashes collects Alex DeCampi's thriller about a reporter and an assassin who team up to uncover a long simmering conspiracy; the first part was originally published by IDW; the sequel was funded on Kickstarter and illustrated by artists including McNeil, Bill Sienkiewicz and Richard Pace.

Also drawing from the webcomics world, Sin Titulo, Cameron Stewart’s Eisner Award winning story about a young man who discovers family secrets after the death of his grandfather, will be collected in September. And in October, Villain House by Shannon Wheeler (Too Much Coffee Man) humorously explores a band of lovable supervillains and their misdvantures in foiled bank robberies, disastrous team-ups and bad dates.

Finally The Best of Milligan and McCarthy collects the Newwave classics by Peter Milligan and Brendan McCarthy from the 80s such as Freakwave, Paradax!, Skin, and Rogan Gosh.
