Ken Michaels, currently the global chief operating officer of Macmillan Science and Education (MSE), has been named CEO of Macmillan Higher Education and Macmillan New Ventures.

Michaels will begin his new job when the proposed merger between parts of MSE and Springer Science+Business Media is concluded. MSE, like Macmillan Higher Education and Macmillan new Ventures, is owned by the Holtzbrinck Publishing Group.

In his new role, Michaels will report to John Sargent, CEO of Macmillan Publishers and executive board member ofHPG. The MSE-Springer merger is expected to close later this year. The units that Michaels will oversee-- Macmillan Education’s U.S. higher education group and Macmillan New Venture--are not part of the Springer deal, and will continue to be owned by HPG.

Michaels joined Macmillan in 2013 from Hachette Book Group. He had previously held senior positions at the McGraw Hill Cos.
