Harvard University Press will publish the first-ever volume, in English, of work by Chinese writer and this year's Nobel Peace Prize winner, Liu Xiaobo. HUP is planning to do a 20,000-copy first printing of the volume, which is scheduled for early 2012.

Liu is currently serving an 11-year prison sentence in China for speaking out against the state. According to HUP executive editor Lindsay Waters, who acquired the collection, it will offer Liu’s “unique, critical insider’s account of contemporary China.” The book, which does not yet have a title, will feature 31 pieces by Liu, most of which are critical essays, though some poetry will also be included in the volume.

The collection, which was compiled by the author’s wife, will include a number of the articles that the Chinese court cited in its case against Liu, as well as the court’s final verdict.
