Peter Booth Wiley, chairman of the board of John Wiley & Sons since 2002, announced his intention to retire as chair at the end of his current term in September 2015. The board has recommended that Matthew S. Kissner, a member of the Wiley board since 2003, be appointed as his successor.

Wiley joined the board in 1984 and later succeeded his brother, Bradford Wiley II, as chairman. Kissner is a former executive at Pitney Bowes and has served on Wiley’s board since 2003 including service as chair of the Executive, Governance, Audit, and Compensation committees.

While announcing his plans to retire, Wiley also emphasized that the Wiley family will continue to play a role in the leadership of the global research, professional and educational publisher. “The Wiley family remains committed to its leadership role in governance of the company and to maintaining Wiley’s legacy as an independent, competitively ambitious enterprise with a strong board, experienced management, and a global community of creative colleagues," he said in a statement.

Wiley also noted that his sons, Jesse Wiley, a Wiley strategic business development manager, and Nate Wiley, a Wiley corporate marketing manager, continue to work at the company. Jesse Wiley also serves on the Wiley board.

“We currently emphasize family involvement in board leadership and a super-majority of independent directors, who work together to ensure that the board represents all of Wiley’s stakeholders,” Peter Wiley said. “I am proud of my work sustaining the family’s commitment to industry leadership and best governance practices.”
