Tor Publishing Group, a division of Macmillan, has announced the retirements of Patrick Nielsen Hayden, editor-at-large, and Linda Quinton, publisher and VP of Tor’s Forge Books imprint, effective January 5. Hayden and Quinton had each spent nearly four decades at the publisher, which is best known for its science fiction and fantasy titles.

Hayden, a three-time Hugo and World Fantasy Award–winning editor, was a mainstay of Tor’s editorial team for 37 years, publishing the debut novels of Cory Doctorow and John Scalzi. Hayden previously served as VP, associate publisher, and editor-in-chief before taking the editor-at-large title in May 2024. Hayden also helped found Tor.com (now Reactor) between 2006 and 2008 and created the Tor Essentials imprint in 2020,

Quinton’s nearly forty-year career at Tor culminated in nine years at the helm of Forge, which focuses on thriller, mystery, and general fiction and nonfiction titles. No one will replace her as VP and publisher, per a TPG spokesperson, and her duties will be split among existing editorial staff.
