Pierogi Lovers Unite
New Yorkers gathered to celebrate the publication of The Veselka Cookbook: Recipes and Stories from the Landmark Restaurant in New York's East Village by Tom Birchard and Natalie Danford on October 28. The cookbook includes more than 150 recipes, covering Ukrainian classics (potato pierogi, five kinds of borscht, grilled kielbasa, poppy seed cake), sandwiches, breakfast fare (including Veselka’s renowned pancakes) and the many elements of a traditional Ukrainian Christmas Eve feast. Thomas Dunne released the book on October 27.

Getting Down in Big Sur
California sunshine and spectacular scenery provided the backdrop for a party on October 24 celebrating Romney Steele’s My Nepenthe: Bohemian Tales of Food, Family, and Big Sur (Andrews McMeel). The event took place at the titular 60-year-old landmark restaurant in Big Sur, Calif., which was founded by the author’s grandparents. The book includes 85 recipes along with anecdotes, history and memories. Entertainment included belly-dancing performances (pictured here is the author’s cousin, Holly Christina).
