Job Summary:

The primary responsibility for this role is to direct all marketing activities for the HarperCollins Christian Publishing (HCCP – Zondervan and Thomas Nelson) Trade Curriculum and Bible study products. In conjunction with the VP and Publisher, this role will develop the overall annual marketing strategy, and then within that framework, will develop appropriate marketing plans to support individual products.

As such, this person must be adept at reaching and understanding core consumer markets, notably pastors, church leaders, small group leaders and laypeople engaged in regular Bible study, small group studies and training curriculum for adults, teens and children. This position plays a central part in the overall Trade Curriculum publishing program by facilitating relationships with key authors, organizations, and pastors/church leaders; consulting with publishing leadership on overall strategy and decision-making; and overseeing the Trade Curriculum marketing program and tactics.


Essential Responsibilities:

• Advocate, grow and enhance the HCCP Trade Curriculum brand
• Oversee and execute entire marketing process from creative through to completion for new curricula/Bible studies (25+ titles per year). This includes: input at publication board meetings; titling; cover direction; overall positioning; video strategy; copywriting; endorsements; advertising; public relations; and Internet marketing.
• Craft integrated marketing plans for all Trade Curriculum products
• Collaborate regularly on the development and execution of promotional plans with authors, agents, and key partnerships such as North Point Ministries, Redeemer City to City, Focus on the Family, Saddleback Resources and Willow Creek Association.
• Actively engage, understand, and target consumers by (1) utilizing consumer, trade, and product research, while making recommendations for future research needs; (2) reading magazines/journals/websites and attending selected conferences; (3) staying abreast of how the digital world is changing the Trade Curriculum and Bible study markets; and (4) reading relevant reviews, blogs, and catalogs from other publishers
• Assist with sales presentations and key account strategy sessions; coordinate promotional plans with sales department leadership, field reps, and support staff
• Collaborate with publisher and acquisitions staff to establish acquisitions strategy and timing
• Oversee YouTube First Sessions strategy


Social Media, Digital Marketing and Public Relations:

• Direct and manage Trade Curriculum social media strategy and execution of YouTube, Google, Faith Gateway and Facebook strategies
• Supervise hiring of freelancer publicists and develop relationships with gatekeepers at key media outlets, including print, television, and radio—both general and religious markets


M&P Budget

• Maintain detailed account of expenditures, review and revise Open-to-Buy report, and estimate future expenditures with VP and Publisher
• Initiate purchase orders for all promotional expenses
• Approve and process vendor invoices

Other:

• Work with director of ChurchSource to grow direct business to pastors, church leaders and small group leaders
• Oversee display and promotions at select Small Group conferences
• Work with sales department to strategize new opportunities for increasing sales

Work Experience:

• 5+ years in publishing with a working knowledge of both sales and marketing and especially digital/online marketing
• Working knowledge of the publishing industry
• Familiarity with churches and small group ministry
• Marketing, sales, or public relations background
• Competence managing significant budgets


Education: B.A in marketing, communications, or equivalent work experience
