Kidding Around With Oprah
Daisy Maryles, with Dick Donahue -- 12/15/97
We were right on the mark last week with our item on the newest pick by Oprah for her book club -- the first three titles in the Little Bill Books for Beginning Readers by Bill Cosby from Scholastic/Cartwheel. Oprah's decision to target books for younger readers was based on the slew of letters she has been getting from readers all year long asking her to include children's books in her selections. Scholastic quickly and dramatically upped the print figures for the titles. Pre-Oprah, the three books -- The Meanest Thing to Say, The Best Way to Play, and The Treasure Hunt -- had 80,000 copies each in paper, plus a nominal hardcover printing for the institutional market. Post-Oprah, Scholastic is reprinting a combined total of one million copies for the three books. All also bodes well for the next three Little Bill titles due early next year -- Super-Fine Valentine, Shipwreck Saturday, and Money Trouble.
