Possible Deal for Crown Books
-- 7/6/98
Crown Books president Anna Currence told PW last week that a board meeting was set to be held Wednesday, July 1, to discuss the possible sale of the bookstore chain. Although Books-A-Million and Wallace's have been mentioned as possible acquisition candidates, Currence said the potential purchaser is a financial buyer, and that if the deal is approved, she would stay on as president.
Currence denied widespread rumors that the company was planning on closing as many as 77 outlets. According to Currence, "no definitive strategic decision" has been made with regard to future store closings. Currence also said she had no comment on Ingram's lawsuit against the chain.
