TikTok Boom

Another week, another book catapulted onto the bestseller list by BookTok. In this case, it’s the erotic romance community #SmutTok, a hashtag four billion views strong, that buoyed four books in the Twisted series by Ana Huang, who cut her teeth in self-publishing before inking a deal with Sourcebooks’ Bloom Books imprint. Three books in the series—Twisted Love, Twisted Games, and Twisted Hate—appear on our top 10 overall list and are in the top five of our trade paperback list this week. (A fourth, Twisted Lies, lands at #6 on the trade paperback chart and narrowly missed the top 10.)

Bestselling the Story

While the filmgoing public can’t get enough of Barbieheimer, book buyers are taking a cue from the pop music charts. Easily topping this week’s overall bestseller list is Beyond the Story: 10-Year Record of BTS, the first official book release by the South Korean boy band that has taken the world by storm. The book began making waves in May, when rumors started swirling that the title—then known only as “4C Untitled Flatiron Nonfiction Summer 2023”—might be by Taylor Swift. That it wasn’t didn’t stop it from easily clearing the 100,000-copy mark in its first week. With that in mind, is BTS bigger than the Beatles? The numbers tell the story: Paul McCartney’s latest book, 1964: Eyes of the Storm, has sold 32,254 copies since its June 13 release—less than one-third of what Beyond the Story managed in a single week.

Back in Bloom

Debbie Macomber has a bestseller again, with the “sweet and squeaky clean small-town romance” Must Love Flowers pushing 8,755 copies in its first week and hitting #7 on our hardcover fiction list. It’s a decrease in first-week sales from her last two books, December’s The Christmas Spirit (12,796 copies) and last May’s The Best Is Yet to Come (11,608 copies), but Flowers landed higher on the list than either—a case in point of the downward sales trends we’ve seen all year. Still, there’s nothing down about the book itself, according to our review: “With skillful plotting and believable characters who tug at the heartstrings, Macomber’s latest does not disappoint.”
