This appealing retrospective offers a short, superficial text by New York University journalism professor Chadwick ( How to Buy, Sell, and Invest in Baseball Cards and Sports Memorabilia ) and pictures taken or selected by commercial photographer Spindel. On view are all manner of memorabilia from the covers of magazines and sheet music, movie posters, watches, bats, balls and ceramic figurines to World Series ticket stubs. In addition are brief quotes, a few from players or managers but most from Yankees supporters, aged five to 57. Pages of Yankee statistics include data on most games played (Mickey Mantle), most home runs (self-evident) and best lifetime ERA (Whitey Ford) and biographies of stars from Wee Willie Keeler to Don Mattingly. Admirers of the Bombers will be enthralled. (Mar.)
