The Summer Camp Survival Guide: Cool Games, Camp Classics, and How to Capture the Flag

Chris Pallatto and Ron DeFazio, illus. by Ethan Long, Sterling, $12.95 (144p) ISBN 978-1-4027-4912-4

This spiral-bound guide to selecting, preparing for, and getting the most out of summer camp integrates an introduction and tear-out section aimed at parents amid its many suggestions for campers. The book is written in a friendly, conversational tone, with humorous cartoon illustrations and interactive components such as perforated postcards for campers to send home. Those just getting their feet wet should appreciate sections devoted to beating homesickness, rules and strategies for playing common camp games, and saying good-bye to new friends at the end of a camp session (there are autograph and address sections toward the end), though once they're seasoned campers, they may find it's cooler to just wing it. Ages 7–12. (June)
