Amazon has announced its bestselling books of 2013, with Dan Brown's Inferno claiming the #1 spot on the adult list, and Veronica Roth's Allegiant taking the #1 spot on the children's list. The list covers sales of first edition books published in 2013, only paid titles, and takes into account both print and Kindle editions. Speaking to the results, editorial director of books and Kindle, Sara Nelson, said: "Last year’s bestseller list was filled with Fifty Shades and contemporary romance, but in 2013 Mysteries & Thrillers captured readers attention, with 11 of the top 20 books falling in that category."
Other big sellers on the adult fiction side were Khaled Hosseini's And the Mountains Echoed (#2), Robert Galbraith's The Cuckoo's Calling (#3), and Liane Moriarty's The Husband's Secret (#4). James Patterson was responsible for three of the top selling 20 titles on Amazon in the year and, on the nonfiction side, Sheryl Sandberg's Lean In took the top spot, landing at #5 on the overall adult list.
On the children's side, the names cropping up in the top spots were Rick Riordan, whose The House of Hades took the #2 slot; Jeff Kinney, with Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck (#3); and Rush Limbaugh, whose Rush Revere and the Brave Pilgrims took the #4 slot.
