Hillel Black, who was a publisher of Macmillan and an editor-in-chief at William Morrow, died February 8. He was 86.

After spending most of his career at major New York houses, Black joined Sourcebooks as executive editor in 2000, where he started the company’s fiction imprint, Sourcebooks Landmark.

In a tribute to Black on Sourcebooks’ website, Todd Stocke wrote: “Hillel’s care for books and authors was unparalleled, and his drive to find the next big book was never-ending. He was a mentor to me and to many others here.”

Black left Sourcebooks in 2009 and continued to work as a freelance editor for six more years.
