New stores open their doors in Illinois and Ontario, Canada; stores in Maryland and California prep for relocation celebrations; and more.

Book World Opens in DeKalb: DeKalb is getting its first general interest bricks-and-mortar bookstore since the closing of a Barnes & Noble at the end of 2014. The 7,000 sq. ft. store, part of the Appleton, Wis.-based chain of 45 stores, opens today.

Writer Michelle Berry to Open a Bookstore: The Canadian author (Interference) is the latest writer to add bookseller to her resume. She plans to open Hunter Street Books in downtown Peterborough, Ontario, in November.

New Location for Branches Books & Gifts: The three-year-old bookstore, owned by Anne Driscoll, successfully negotiated the move to a newly renovated 1,500 sq. ft. storefront in Oakhurst, Calif., where it reopened late last week. A weekend long “Grand Relocation Party,” including a ribbon cutting on September 2 is planned for the upcoming Labor Day weekend.

Annapolis Bookstore Settling In After Move: After moving a short walk from its previous location earlier this month, the Annapolis Bookstore in Annapolis, Md., is readying a grand opening celebration. It will hold an open house and an author event for September 10 followed by a second author event on September 15th.

New England Sales Rep Bob Werner to Retire: After 42 years in the book business, where he started as a bookseller at the Harvard Coop. Werner is retiring. He was a field sales rep for William Morrow for 17 years before moving to Macmillan, which he has represented for more than two decades. His last day on the job will be his 66th birthday, September 30.
