In the new graphic novel Bronze Faces by Shobo, Shof, and Alexandre Tefenkgi, a trio of young Nigerians hatch a scheme to steal historic works of African art looted by the British and return them to their homeland. When an acclaimed traditional Nigerian artist dies, his son Timi, a young musician now living in London, is forced to sell his father’s works to a British gallery due to family debts. Timi’s childhood friends–two women, Sango, now a London architect, and Gbonka, a budding Nigerian politician–attempt to buy the works and keep them in Nigeria. When their offers are refused, the trio pivots–instead they steal the father’s works only to discover the scattered whereabouts of all the priceless Benin bronze masks looted during the colonial era.
In this 8-page excerpt, Timi, along with Sango and Gbonka–who share a troubled personal relationship–plot a series of daring global heists against a rich backdrop of Nigerian art, culture and colonial oppression. Bronze Faces by Shobo, Shof, and Alexandre Tefenkgi is out now from Boom! Studios.
