Mitzi Angel, currently senior v-p and publisher of Farrar, Straus and Giroux, will succeed Jonathan Galassi as president of the imprint on January 1. She will report to Macmillan Publishers president Jon Yaged. Angel will remain publisher, and Galassi will move into the newly created role of chairman and executive editor of FSG.

Angel, the first woman to hold the position, follows Galassi and Roger Straus as president of FSG, which celebrates its 75th anniversary this year. Among the authors she has brought to the FSG stable and edited are Rachel Cusk, Garth Greenwell, Sheila Heti, Ben Lerner, Deborah Levy, Yiyun Li, Sally Rooney, and Amia Srinivasan.

“Jonathan has led a remarkable house, publishing and editing many celebrated writers, prizewinners, and literary masters. He has been a vital member of the FSG team for thirty-five years and I am pleased he will continue supporting our authors and building FSG’s great list as chairman and executive editor,” Macmillan CEO Don Weisberg said in a statement. “I am delighted that Mitzi, an accomplished leader with superb literary taste and industry expertise, will be his successor, continuing to evolve and strengthen this publishing and cultural institution in ways she has already proven in her time as publisher. This is an exciting moment in the history of FSG and Macmillan, as we congratulate Mitzi on her appointment.”

As president, Angel will oversee a publishing group that includes the imprints FSG, MCD, and Picador. Before coming to FSG, she was publisher of Faber & Faber Limited, and previously held several positions at FSG, including v-p, executive editor, and publisher of Faber and Faber, Inc., FSG's former joint imprint with Faber & Faber Limited.

Rodrigo Corral, v-p and creative director, at FSG, will now report to Angel, in addition to her current direct reports: Eric Chinski, senior v-p and editor-in-chief; Sean McDonald, senior v-p of MCD; Sheila O’Shea, senior v-p and director of marketing and publicity; Spenser Lee, senior v-p and director of sales; Hank Cochrane, v-p and associate publisher of Picador; Debra Helfand, v-p and executive managing editor; Devon Mazzone, v-p of subsidiary rights; and Molly Walls, assistant editor. Galassi will report to both Angel and Weisberg.

“I am proud to be the new president of Farrar, Straus and Giroux and to follow the distinguished years of Jonathan Galassi,” Angel said. “I look forward to the company’s ongoing success and its contribution to literature and to culture generally. We have always aimed high; my colleagues and I are eager to search out quality in new places and to promote new voices while continuing with the riches we have, both in English and in translation. Jonathan, in his new position as chairman and executive editor, will continue to work full-time with his authors and to acquire new projects. My wonderful colleagues and I will work to build on what he has achieved and will count on his invaluable guidance.”

The news follows a series of personnel changes at FSG, especially in its marketing and publicity departments, including Lottchen Shivers's move to the position of director of publicity at Picador. In addition, FSG's COO, Andrew Mandel, has left the imprint.
