Paula Hawkins’s debut thriller, The Girl on the Train, performed well in several European markets in June. The book topped France’s list, rising eight spots from the previous month; in the Netherlands, it fell two spots, coming in at #4; and in Spain, the book debuted at #2 on the country’s fiction list.
In France, Guillaume Musso’s The Present Moment held firm at #2. The Melody Lingers On by Mary Higgins Clark debuted on the chart at #3. Simon & Schuster released the novel in the U.S. on June 23.
Pope Francis’s second encyclical took the #1 spot on France’s nonfiction chart—it was copublished there by Cerf/Bayard/Mame, the three historical publishers of Vatican texts in France. The work was released in the U.S. in July by several companies, among them Our Sunday Visitor, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, and CreateSpace.
Topshow, the tie-in book to Voetbal International, a Dutch soccer talk show, held on to the top spot on the combined list in the Netherlands. Karin Slaughter’s Pretty Girls made its first appearance there at #2. The book will be released Stateside by William Morrow at the end of September. Also new to the list was Powerfood, the second cookbook by nutritionist and health coach Rens Kroes, which came in at #5.
In Spain, The Temperance by María Dueñas climbed from #2 to #1. The previous top seller, Isabel Allende’s The Japanese Lover, fell to the #3 spot. Atria is set to publish Allende’s book in the U.S. in November. Once again, Ana Romero’s Endgame was the top-selling nonfiction title in Spain, followed by Anthony Beevor’s Ardennes 1944, to be released by Viking in November.
