Ugh

Arthur Yorinks. Farrar Straus Giroux, $13.95 (32pp) ISBN 978-0-374-38028-1

Ugh , the title character of Yorinks' and Egielski's latest picture book, is a cave boy whose older siblings make him do all the cave work. In his spare time Ugh invents the bicycle and, in a sequence of comic events, becomes king of the world. Ugh has all the familiar trappings of the collaborators' earlier works: a witty, colloquial text and broad, colorful illustrations. While Yorinks's story is not quite as imaginative as either Louis the Fish or It Happened in Pinsk , and while Egielski's pictures are not quite as colorful or exuberant as those in Caldecott Medal-winning Hey Al! , Ugh is funny enough, attractive enough and entertaining enough to please the many fans of this gifted duo. Ages 3-up. (Sept.)
