Robert K. Tanenbaum, read by Mel Foster. Brilliance Audio, unabridged, eight CDs, 9 hrs., $29.99 ISBN 978-1-4558-1938-6

This latest novel in Tanenbaum’s Butch Karp/Marlene Ciampi series finds Manhattan district attorney Karp on the side of the suspect, a fragile teenager named Felix Acevedo, who has been railroaded by a ruthless, self-serving homicide detective into confessing to several high profile rape-murders. With Acevedo in jail, Karp’s wife, Ciampi, launches an investigation to catch the real killer and clear the young suspect’s name. Although Mel Foster’s narration is oddly precise and even slightly condescending at times, he does demonstrate his talent for accents. Creating unique voices for the book’s many characters, Foster’s helpless, confused, and fearful Felix is a standout. Additionally, Foster infuses a touch of self-loathing—or perhaps self-doubt—in his rendition of the book’s gruff and crooked cop. A Gallery hardcover. (June)
