Jessie is a methodical youngster, and she likes to have everything just so before she gets settled. In Hurry Up, Jessie!, Jessie and her mother are going to the beach. But before she's ready to go, Jessie has to find her missing sneaker, a search which leads her to find other lost items. The theme in Good Night, Jessie! is much the same. Jessie is supposed to be in bed, but she has to get her room in order. Both adults and children will readily identify with Jessie's wish to do things in her own time and her mother's desire to have things done right now! Smith's crayon-bright illustrations work well with the concept: small cutouts give Jessie and readers a glimpse of the sought-after objects and let everyone in on the search. Ages 3-6. (November)
