A trio of YA authors will celebrate the publication of Holly Black’s The Poison Eaters: and Other Stories (Feb.), the first original fiction collection from Big Mouth House, the recently launched children’s publishing arm of Small Beer Press, and raise money for the Franciscan Hospital for Children in Brighton, Mass. The panel, which features Black, Link (The Pretty Monsters), and Cassandra Clare (the Mortal Instruments series), is sponsored by Brookline Booksmith and will be held at the Coolidge Corner Theatre on Thursday, March, 11 at 6 p.m. A portion of the $5 ticket price as well as of book sales will be donated to the children’s rehabilitation hospital, where the 11-month-old daughter of press founders Link and Gavin Grant is being cared for on the pulmonary ward.

Black brought the collection to Small Beer through a somewhat circuitous route. Her office is in the same refitted warehouse in Easthampton, Mass., which is how she met Link and Grant. For The Poison Eaters the pair encouraged Black to participate in the entire process of making the book. According to Grant, Black not only chose the paper that the cover is printed on, but also the colors and the cover image. The Poison Eaters will launch with one of Small Beer’s largest print runs to date, 15,000 copies.

The March event will be Black’s only appearance to promote the collection, since she will be doing an extensive tour in May for her first book in the Curse Worker series, White Cat (Margaret K. McElderry, May). To build interest in the panel, Small Beer is encouraging attendees, as well as those who can’t make it, to email their questions to the authors in advance. At the event the panelists will answer selected questions posed in advance, as well as questions from the audience.

The Poison Eaters is the second book to be published by Big Mouth House. The first, Joan Aiken’s The Serial Garden, came out in October. Forthcoming titles include a novel by YA author Delia Sherman as well as Lydia Millet’s first foray into children’s books, a series about three children who live on Cape Cod whose mother disappears.
