The Incredible True Story of the Making of the Eve of Destruction by Amy Brashear. Soho Teen, $18.99; ISBN 978-1-61695-903-6. In this YA novel set in 1984, the only interesting thing about Griffin Flat, Ark., is that it’s surrounded by nuclear missile silos. But when it’s picked as the filming location for the adaptation of Boudreaux Beauchamp’s novella “Eve of Destruction,” everyone is excited.

Hide and Seek by Anthony Browne. Candlewick, $17.99; ISBN 978-1-5362-0260-1. Casting about for a way to cheer themselves up after their dog goes missing, Cy and his older sister decide to play hide-and-seek in the woods around their trailer, in this picture book.

Bold and Brave: Ten Heroes Who Won Women the Right to Vote by Kirsten Gillibrand, illus. by Maira Kalman. Knopf, $18.99; ISBN 978-0-525-57901-4. Making her children’s book debut, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand offers a personal history of the strong women in her family (her roller-skating grandmother, her karate black-belt mother), then introduces 10 notable suffragists spanning eras, socioeconomic backgrounds, and professions. The picture book earned a starred review from PW.

It Wasn’t Me by Dana Alison Levy. Delacorte, $16.99; ISBN 978-1-5247-6643-6. What at first seems like a YA novel solely about bullying becomes a story about six kids who find their way to true friendship and fierce loyalty, and why restorative justice is worth the time and effort it takes. The book earned a starred review from PW.

Little Fox in the Snow by Jonathan London, illus. by Daniel Miyares. Candlewick, $16.99; ISBN 978-0-7636-8814-1. London conveys an animal’s primal concerns in this picture book, while Miyares’s rough strokes and bold washes emphasize a winter forest’s web-of-life realities and stark beauty.

Astrid the Unstoppable by Maria Parr, trans. from the Norwegian by Guy Puzey. Candlewick, $16.99; ISBN 978-1-5362-0017-1. At nine years old, free-range Astrid Glimmerdal has the whole wide world (or at least her tiny Norwegian town) “in front of her skis.” As the only child around, however, she has to get creative about finding friends.

Pulp by Robin Talley. Harlequin Teen, $18.99; ISBN 978-1-335-01290-6. In this YA novel, the story of a woman who writes lesbian pulp novels in the 1950s in an era where it is dangerous to do so alternates with a contemporary teen with love troubles of her own, who discovers a pulp novel that helps see her through.

Week of November 19, 2018

I Do Not Like Books Anymore! Daisy Hirst. Candlewick, $15.99; ISBN 978-1-5362-0334-9. In this follow-up to Alphonse, That Is Not OK to Do!, siblings Natalie and Alphonse have become heavily invested in the prospect of Natalie learning how to read. The picture book earned a starred review from PW.

Found by Jeff Newman, illus. by Larry Day. Simon & Schuster, $17.99; ISBN 978-1-5344-1006-0. In this wordless tale about a child who learns to love a new dog, a girl gazes out her apartment window on a rainy day and spots something below: a puppy wading miserably through a puddle. The book earned a starred review from PW.
