Ready to Fly: How Sylvia Townsend Became the Bookmobile Ballerina by Lea Lyon and A. LaFaye, illus. by Jessica Gibson. HarperCollins, $18.99; ISBN 978-0-06-288878-5. Townsend, the protagonist of this picture book is a black child in 1950s California with dreams of being a ballerina.
