In this bouncy rhyming picture book by Schwartz and Call, a turkey bundles up against 10-degree winter chill before heading outside, but upon walking around the farmyard, he notices that his friends are even colder than he is.

Amos McGee Misses the Bus by Philip C. Stead, illus. by Erin E. Stead. Roaring Brook, $18.99; ISBN 978-1-250-21322-8. This sequel to A Sick Day for Amos McGee by the married collaborators accurately duplicates the world of its predecessor. Erin Stead’s skillful pencil and woodblock print art gives zookeeper Amos and his animal charges compassionate expressions, making them the kinds of characters who draw the best out of each other.

New Year by Mei Zihan, trans. from the Chinese by Yan Yan, illus. by Qin Leng. Greystone Kids, $18.95; ISBN 978-1-77164-731-1. A Chinese father living in Beijing pens this heartfelt, gracefully sketched letter to his adult daughter, a translator living in France with her French husband, Sylvain.
