‘Unearthing’ a New Novel

Henry Holt Books for Young Readers will publish Warrior Girl Unearthed, a new novel from Printz winner Angeline Bouley, in May 2023. It’s a companion to Bouley’s debut novel, Firekeeper’s Daughter, and is set in the same community but centering on a new character. Described as a “fast-paced thriller” in a release, Bouley’s latest follows an Ojibwe teen who refuses to allow her ancestors’ stolen graves to be used for profit, and with her friends plans a heist to steal them back. “I revel in telling stories about Ojibwe teenagers—strong in their culture and language‑who love their communities,” Bouley said in a statement. Firekeeper’s Daughter also centers Ojibwe youth, where high school senior Daunis’s investigation of drug-related deaths within her community leads to a shocking revelation, and similarly explores themes of injustice towards Native communities.

Do You ‘Remember’?

U.S. Poet Laureate Joy Harjo and Caldecott Medalist Michaela Goade (We Are Water Protectors) are joining forces for a new picture book, Remember, inspired by Harjo’s renowned poem of the same title from her 1983 poetry collection She Had Some Horses. Remember will be published by Random House Studio in March 2023, edited by Lee Wade, v-p and publisher. Wade acquired world rights from Jin Auh at the Wylie Agency and Kirsten Hall at Catbird Productions. In the book, Harjo, a member of the Mvskoke Nation, and Goode, a member of the Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska, pull from different aspects of Native culture to inspire young readers to commemorate and take notice of the world around them. “Through the book-making process, I’ve learned a great deal from these two deeply observant and thoughtful creators, including the need to pause and reflect on the wonder of the world around us,” Wade said in a release. “I look forward to young readers being able to learn from them as well.”
