Dave Eggers will return to the world of his Newbery Medal–winning middle grade novel The Eyes & the Impossible with The Eyes, the Fire & the Avalanche Kingdom, a sequel set to release November 18 from Knopf Books for Young Readers.

In this new installment, illustrated by previous collaborator Shawn Harris, adventurous dog Johannes cannot resist an invitation from a goat to join her on a ship leaving on a trip. On this journey, Johannes learns that the prey of the forest have gone into hiding, but with a powerful weapon that could upend the entire social order of the wilderness.

The Eyes & the Impossible released in 2024, to much critical acclaim, earning six starred reviews and the Newbery Medal. In a statement, Melanie Nolan, VP and publisher of Knopf, called The Eyes & the Impossible “a once in a lifetime book.” But after Eggers had the seed of an idea, the concepts for a second book were in motion. “Within a few pages, it was clear the first book had only ended to give readers an intermission,” Nolan said. “The magic was there, and it was hilarious and familiar in all the ways I hoped it would still be.”

On this next adventure following Johannes, Nolan said, “The result is a delightful, hilarious, and at times profound book that celebrates the meaning of freedom—a worthy reminder for readers of all ages, and in all times.”
