  • New Study: 55% of YA Books Bought by Adults

    More than half the consumers of books classified for young adults aren’t all that young. According to a new study, fully 55% of buyers of works that publishers designate for kids aged 12 to 17 -- nicknamed YA books -- are 18 or older, with the largest segment aged 30 to 44, which alone accounted for 28% of YA sales. And adults aren’t just purchasing for others -- when asked about the intended recipient, they report that 78% of the time they are purchasing books for their own reading.

  • A YA Press Grows in New Hampshire

    Psychologist Kate Kaynak and her husband, Osman, started YA publisher Spencer Hill Press in 2010 out of their home in Hopkinton, N.H., with two books on their first list. Just over two years after their launch, the Kaynaks are already adding two new imprints – one for adults and a second for contemporary YA novels.

  • New Leaf Literary & Media Stages Multiple-Author Event

    Five YA authors, more than 200 attendees, 540 books sold. These are the impressive numbers tied to a panel presentation and signing held at Anderson's Bookshop in Naperville, Ill. on August 30. The event was unusual in that it was organized by the authors' agency, New Leaf Literary & Media, Inc.

  • Marcus to Succeed Gibson at Random House Children's Books

    After a 30-year career at Random House, the last 10 in which he ran Random House Children’s Books division, Chip Gibson is leaving the company. Gibson will be succeeded as president and publisher of the division by children’s publishing veteran Barbara Marcus. The changes are effective immediately.

  • A New Augmented Book Brings Ghost Stories to Life

    Goosebottom Books is releasing Horrible Hauntings: An Augmented Reality Collection of Ghosts and Ghouls by Shirin Bridges, illustrated by William Maughan (October), a book of ghost stories designed to be read in tandem with an augmented reality app.

  • Cherry Lake Acquires Sleeping Bear Press

    Cherry Lake Publishing, a Mankato, Minn.-based educational publisher, announced that the company has acquired Sleeping Bear Press.

  • Two Adult Houses Launch YA Imprints

    It was inevitable, the two publishers say, one after 26 years of publishing books for adult readers, the other founded only three years ago. Soho Press, which has published literary fiction and mysteries since 1986, and Angry Robot, a science fiction and fantasy publisher since 2009, are each building upon the crossover appeal of many of their genre fiction releases by launching YA imprints that complement their adult offerings.

  • Storytime in Asia: Quality Picture Books for Developing Countries

    This month, four children's book publishers – Scholastic, Penguin, Abrams, and Little, Brown – have donated a combined total of more than 120,000 books to the Asia Foundation's Storytime in Asia campaign, a month-long venture that is supplying English-language picture books to two million children in 17 countries in developing Asia.

  • New Joint Venture to Publish Macmillan Trade Titles in China

    Macmillan Publishers (China) Ltd. and 21st Century Publishing House Co. Ltd. have launched Macmillan Century, which will acquire, develop, introduce, and promote trade titles sourced from Macmillan's global imprints for the Chinese market.

    Over the past five years, licensed books and supplemental educational materials have increasingly made their way into school libraries and classrooms. Educators have come to accept that licensed titles are a way to bring in reluctant readers and sustain interest in subjects like math and science. Meanwhile, licensors value the exposure their properties can generate in schools, something that can be difficult to replicate through traditional entertainment or retail channels these days.
