  • Children's Book News from SIBA

    There was a heavy dose of children’s books – especially young adult – at the Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance regional trade show, held September 7-9 in Naples, Fla. Unfortunately the children’s author panels all competed against each other for the same time slot: Friday at 4:10 p.m. The sessions featured 17 children’s authors divided into four panels, many of whom also appeared at Friday's author "SignAround."

  • An (Electronic) Bright Spot for Children's Book Sales in May

    E-books continue to be headline news, and the children's category is no exception: among the 20 houses reporting to the Association of American Publishers, e-book sales grew by nearly 300% in May 2012, compared with May 2011 figures.

  • New Study: 55% of YA Books Bought by Adults

    More than half the consumers of books classified for young adults aren’t all that young. According to a new study, fully 55% of buyers of works that publishers designate for kids aged 12 to 17 -- nicknamed YA books -- are 18 or older, with the largest segment aged 30 to 44, which alone accounted for 28% of YA sales. And adults aren’t just purchasing for others -- when asked about the intended recipient, they report that 78% of the time they are purchasing books for their own reading.

    Psychologist Kate Kaynak and her husband, Osman, started YA publisher Spencer Hill Press in 2010 out of their home in Hopkinton, N.H., with two books on their first list. Just over two years after their launch, the Kaynaks are already adding two new imprints – one for adults and a second for contemporary YA novels.

  • New Leaf Literary & Media Stages Multiple-Author Event

    Five YA authors, more than 200 attendees, 540 books sold. These are the impressive numbers tied to a panel presentation and signing held at Anderson's Bookshop in Naperville, Ill. on August 30. The event was unusual in that it was organized by the authors' agency, New Leaf Literary & Media, Inc.

  • Marcus to Succeed Gibson at Random House Children's Books

    After a 30-year career at Random House, the last 10 in which he ran Random House Children’s Books division, Chip Gibson is leaving the company. Gibson will be succeeded as president and publisher of the division by children’s publishing veteran Barbara Marcus. The changes are effective immediately.

Martin, and Dan Yaccarino are among the lineup of children's authors and illustrators who will participate in a fundraiser on September 24 to benefit the Children's Museum of the Arts' Artists-in-Residence program at Manhattan's PS 47, the American Sign Language and English Lower School.
