The Story Book House and the Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation hope that brains and brawn, when brought together, can promote literacy. The independent bookstore and the nonprofit foundation are partnering to launch a new community speakers series in Arlington, Tex. The goal of the new speakers series is to facilitate interactions in multiple venues between children, their families, and authors and illustrators. The program is also supported by the Arlington Public Library Foundation and Arlington Chamber of Commerce Foundation.
The Story Book House and the Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation will bring children’s book authors and illustrators to Arlington to tell their stories and explain their creative process at local schools during the day and at ticketed library-sponsored events that evening. The series officially kicked off on September 9 with an appearance in the Texas Rangers Hall of Fame at Rangers Ballpark by Bruce Coville, author of 95 books. More than 100 people attended the event.
Speakers are scheduled through May 2011, and include Stephen Johnson, Eric Kimmel, Mark Teague, Peter McCarty, Frank Beddor, Terri Farley, and Walter Wick. The second speaker in the series, Dan Yaccarino, will visit Arlington on October 21.
All proceeds from ticket sales at the library events will go to the Arlington Public Library.
