This past Tuesday evening, Shaun Tan was presented with the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award at the Stockholm Concert Hall by H.R.H Crown Princess Victoria. The annual award, which was announced on March 29, is the world’s largest prize for children’s and young adult literature. Tan arrived in Stockholm on May 21 from his native Australia, and participated in a week of pre-award activities, seminars, and workshops, including an event with the previous Astrid Lindgren winner, Belgian author/illustrator Kitty Crowther. He also gave a speech at the International Youth Library in Munich, and visited Lindgren’s birthplace in Vimmerby, in southern Sweden. The award ceremony on May 31 was a celebration of Tan and his works; at the end of the evening’s events, his movie, The Lost Thing, which won a 2011 Oscar for Best Animated Short Film, was screened for the audience.
