‘Fake Mustache,’ Real Smiles

On Sunday, while in town for ALA, Tom Angleberger dropped by San Diego bookshop Yellow Book Road. Angleberger (l.), shown here with owners Ann and David Diener, was promoting his new book, Fake Mustache, and the forthcoming third title in his Origami Yoda series, The Secret of the Fortune Wookiee, both for Abrams.

A Sibilant Signing

Scholastic Press authors (from l.) Allan Say, Brian Selznick, and Maggie Stiefvater were on hand to sign books that were honored by the ALA this year: Say’s Drawing from Memory received a Sibert Honor, Selznick’s Wonderstruck won the Schneider Family Book Award, and Stiefvater’s The Scorpio Races nabbed a Printz Honor.

Printz, Charming

Over at Little, Brown’s booth, two authors who have earned recognition from the Printz committee in previous years were all smiles: Paolo Bacigalupi (l.), the 2011 Printz Award winner for Ship Breaker, and Sherman Alexie, a 2007 nominee (and National Book Award for Young People’s Literature winner) for The Absolutely True Adventures of a Part-Time Indian.

Birds of a Feather

A trio of Penguin authors from different imprints flocked together at ALA to promote their new works. From left, Ally Condie discussed Reached (Dutton, Nov.), the conclusion to her Matched trilogy; Marie Lu signed galleys of Prodigy (Putnam, Jan. 2013), the sequel to Legend; and Jessica Khoury, debut author of Origin (Razorbill, Sept.), also started to stretch those signing muscles.

Something Special

Geoff Herbach, author of Nothing Special (Sourcebooks Fire) – an ALA Best Fiction for Young Adults selection, models one of the show’s hot giveaways: the Sourcebooks “Authors Are My Rock Stars” t-shirt. A mad dash for the sassy tops began promptly at 9 a.m. each day, with attendees racing from the entrance to score one.
